Driving In ‘Bad’ Weather … Is The Risk Greater?

09:39

Read the Tim Meakin blog. British Summer Time officially started on the last Sunday in March, but in another unprecedented event, many parts of the UK experienced temperatures below freezing and saw snow fall.

Weather in general always sparks conversation. So, Is driving in bad weather more dangerous, and is the risk greater? Do drivers tend to pay more attention during this time? The motorist who habitually drives one-handed, gazing serenely at the outside, generally comes to and operates at full effort when the weather gets poor. Icy roads and snow also  have a significant impact on driving conditions which can lead to an increased risk of accidents. However, drivers take them for granted and fail to adjust their driving skills accordingly.

“The risk is far greater when the road is wet,” said Tim Meakin from Toton in Nottingham.  According to Tim Meakin, it can be hazardous, therefore, avoid it where possible.

“Exercise patience and caution at all times,”  advised Meakin.

ACTION 1: Check your washer fluid on a regular basis and invest in one which can melt ice should your screen freeze. It’s illegal and unsafe to drive without adequate levels of washer fluid.

ACTION 2: Ensure you clear your vehicle of snow and ice before you start your journey It is not sensible or safe to drive with frosted or partially frosted windows.  Rule 229 of the Highway Code states: “You MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows.”

ACTION  3: A dirty registration plate is a breach of legislation. It’s illegal to drive with a dirty number plate.  Rule 229 of The Highway Code states: "You MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible.”

ACTION  4: Drive Slowly. This decreases the chance of skids and accidents. Learn more about state-specific laws on Tim Meakin from Toton in Nottingham motor vehicle accident legal answers page here.

ACTION  5: Pull Over if You Need to. If you are at all tired, pull over. If the poor weather involves deep snow or heavy rain, be sure you are not pulling over into a deep puddle or snow bank.
